CHAPTER FIFTEEN

A NEW HOME

'Oh, Ralph, love, the new house is beautiful. Is it really ours? I never dreamed we would live in such a place, with all these fineries.’ Irene and Shaun ran from room to room looking at their new house. It had three bedrooms, which meant Shaun would have his own room and they wouldn’t have a curtain separating them for privacy, which also meant Ralph and Irene didn’t have to wait until he was fast asleep to conduct their marital duties. Money had been tight and that was how people lived in the Sixties, so it was the norm. But now it was the Seventies, a new era and a new beginning.

It had been long coming. The house was rented, but it was better than what they had left. Ralph looked out of the window as he drank his tea in the sparsely furnished kitchen. It just had a small garden, but it was enough for Shaun to breathe in some fresh air and kick a ball around. He felt satisfied.

The rent was much higher than he'd expected. Once he had told Irene to have a look around for something bigger to rent she had made her choice and he didn’t have the heart to stop her and say no. Her heart was set on it, even though they didn’t have enough furniture to fill it. All that would come in good time.

'Ralph, it's not my business and I have never interfered in your life.’ His mother looked concerned. ‘How can you afford to rent a place like this? It’s away from the streets and Irene’s friends and family. What are you doing to provide all of this? Are you safe? That is all I care about. You’re my son, and all of this,’ Ralph’s mother waved her arm around the spacious living room, 'all of this doesn’t mean anything to me. You are my son and I love you. Are you in trouble?'

'No, Ma. I’ve just had a stroke of luck. You know me, I’m not a millionaire but I always have some cash on the hip. Don’t worry, just enjoy it. You deserve it. Come on, have a look around. Leave Irene planning on what she is going to do with the place.'

His gunrunning mission to some Italians he had contacted had gone well and been much easier than he had thought. They seemed to know what they were doing, and it was clear to Ralph they had done it before. They had provided the transportation. All he'd had to do was follow the instructions given and drive the van he'd stolen near to the airport and leave it parked up. He'd given them the number plate and left the keys under the passenger seat. They sorted out everything from there.

It all seemed very professional to Ralph. They had paid the money he asked for without a quibble, direct into his Post Office account. He realised that was his biggest mistake. Eyebrows would be raised and questions might be asked.
